Scenic coastal road on Maui winding above the ocean

Realistic Hawaii itineraries

The most common mistake is trying to see too much. These plans are built around what's actually doable — with travel time, reservations, and rest built in.

The rules

How to build any Hawaii itinerary

One island per 5–7 days

Don't island-hop in a week. Each island deserves its own trip.

Two islands = 10–14 days

Add an inter-island flight day (it eats half a day) and you'll be glad you planned.

Book the big stuff first

Reservations (Haleakalā, Hanauma Bay, Kalalau) sell out — lock them in before flights.

Classic

7-Day Maui Itinerary

The most popular single-island trip — whales (Dec–Apr), Road to Hana, and Haleakalā.

  1. Day 1

Arrive & settle in Kihei or Wailea

Land at Kahului (OGG), pick up the rental car, and hit a calm south-shore beach. Early night — jet lag is real.

  2. Day 2

    Haleakalā sunrise (reserve ahead)

Leave before dawn for the summit, then explore Upcountry farms and a Kula lunch on the way down.

  3. Day 3

    Molokini snorkel + whale watch

A morning boat trip to Molokini Crater, then a whale-watching cruise if you're here Dec–Apr.

  4. Day 4

Road to Hana (start before 7am)

Waterfalls, the black-sand beach (reserve), and a slow, winding drive. Stay in Hana overnight if you can.

  5. Day 5

    Hana morning, drive back

Enjoy Hana's quiet morning, then return via the back road or the way you came. Rest day in the afternoon.

  6. Day 6

    West Maui: Lahaina & Kaanapali

Visit Lahaina respectfully (recovery continues), snorkel Black Rock, and watch a sunset at Kaanapali.

  7. Day 7

    Beach day + departure

One last calm morning on the beach before your flight home.

Two islands

10-Day Oahu + Kauai Itinerary

A first-timer favorite: city energy on Oahu, then wild nature on Kauai.

  1. Days 1–3

    Oahu: Waikiki base

Diamond Head, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, and one day on the North Shore. Easy, walkable, and full of variety.

  2. Day 4

    Fly to Kauai (LIH)

A 40-minute flight. Pick up a car and settle into Poipu or Kapaa.

  3. Day 5

    South Shore beaches

Poipu Beach, a snorkel at Lawai, and a relaxed first full day on the Garden Isle.

  4. Day 6

    Waimea Canyon & Kokeʻe

A full-day drive to the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" with rim lookouts and short trails.

  5. Day 7

Na Pali by boat or helicopter

The island's crown jewel. Book ahead and build in weather flexibility.

  6. Days 8–9

    North Shore: Hanalei & Princeville

Hanalei Bay, the Wailua River, and a relaxed end to the trip.

  7. Day 10

    Fly home from Lihue

One last beach morning before departure.
